The
iPhone
is an internet-connected multimedia smartphone designed
and marketed by Apple Inc. with a flush multi-touch screen
and a minimal hardware interface. The device does not
have a physical keyboard, so a virtual keyboard is rendered
on the touch screen instead. The iPhone functions as a
camera phone (including text messaging and visual voicemail),
a portable media player (equivalent to an iPod), and Internet
client (with email, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity).
The first generation phone hardware was quad-band GSM
with EDGE; the second generation also adds UMTS with HSDPA.
Apple announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007. The announcement
was preceded by rumors and speculation that circulated
for several months. The iPhone was initially introduced
in the United States on June 29, 2007 and has since been
introduced worldwide. It was named Time magazine's "Invention
of the Year" in 2007. On July 11, 2008, the iPhone
3G was released. It supports faster 3G data speeds and
Assisted GPS.
The iPad
is a tablet computer designed and marketed by Apple for
Internet browsing, media consumption, gaming, and light
content creation. Released in April 2010, it established
a new class of devices between smartphones and laptops.
As of May 31, 2010, Apple had sold 2 million iPads.
Similar to the older (and smaller) iPod Touch and iPhone,
the iPad runs a modified version of the iPhone OS and
is controlled by a multi-touch LCD sensitive to fingertips,
instead of a stylus as with earlier tablet computers.
It runs iPad-specific applications as well as those written
for the iPhone and iPod Touch, including e-book readers.
The iPad uses Wi-Fi or a 3G data connection to browse
the Internet, load and stream media, and install software.
A USB cable is required to sync the iPad with iTunes on
a personal computer.
The iPod
is a portable media player designed and marketed by Apple
and launched on October 23, 2001. The product line-up
includes the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the touchscreen
iPod Touch, the video-capable iPod Nano, and the compact
iPod Shuffle. The iPhone can function as an iPod but is
generally treated as a separate product. Former iPod models
include the iPod Mini and the spin-off iPod Photo (since
reintegrated into the main iPod Classic line). iPod Classic
models store media on an internal hard drive, while all
other models use flash memory to enable their smaller
size (the discontinued Mini used a Microdrive miniature
hard drive). As with many other digital music players,
iPods can also serve as external data storage devices.
Storage capacity varies by model, ranging from 2 GB for
the iPod Shuffle to 160 GB for the iPod Classic.
Apple's iTunes software can be used to transfer music
to the devices from computers using certain versions of
Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
For users who choose not to use Apple's software or whose
computers cannot run iTunes software, several open source
alternatives to iTunes are also available. iTunes and
its alternatives may also transfer photos, videos, games,
contact information, e-mail settings, Web bookmarks, and
calendars to iPod models supporting those features. |
